CDC guidance overview

Goose droppings and health

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention · June 5, 2024

The CDC explains that duck and goose droppings may contain germs that can infect people, including E. coli, Salmonella, Campylobacter and Cryptosporidium.

Its guidance focuses on swimming pools. It describes how to respond to bird droppings in pool water and how to make the surrounding area less attractive to birds, including avoiding feeding ducks and geese.

The CDC also notes that it is not aware of evidence that Cryptosporidium has spread directly from birds to humans. Follow the original guidance for the complete pool-cleaning instructions.
